Sesto, the small but beautiful village in the middle of a dreamlike mountain world, offers pure nature away from the hustle and bustle and recreational opportunities for every taste.
A holiday in Sesto is particularly popular with alpinists, mountaineers, climbers, hikers, bikers and families. The mountain landscape is extremely impressive, whether you look at it from below or from the very top.
The scenery and nature of the Sesto Dolomites will leave a lasting impression, so that you will remember the incomparable beauty of this place for a long time to come!
Once you’ve been there – come back!
The largest stone sundial in the world is a natural spectacle that is unrivalled worldwide. It consists of the five peaks Neuner, Zehner (Sextner Rotwand), Elfer, Zwölfer and Einser.
But the best thing about it is that the sundial really works.
If you look at the course of the sun from the entrance to the Fischlein Valley, you will notice that it corresponds to the names of the mountains in the valley during the winter solstice. The sun is then exactly over Mount Zwölfer at 12 o’clock and directly over the top of Mount Einser at 1 o’clock. Although the positions of the sun at 9 am and 10 am are not visible due to the mountain ridge in front of Bad Moos, this pattern also applies here.
Incidentally, the Romans reckoned with a different division of time and started counting at sunrise. What we call noon or 12 o’clock today was the sixth hour for them, the “sexta hora”. Historians believe that the name of the village of Sesto comes from the Zwölferkofel mountain, which once signalled the “sexta hora”.
Walks and hiking tours
The Sesto Dolomites and the village of Sesto have become famous and well-known for the world-famous Three Peaks and the surrounding bizarre mountain world with its indescribable panoramic views. There are different tours for every level of difficulty..
If you want to escape the hustle and bustle for a while, then you will feel particularly at home on the hike to the Gsellwiesen. As there are no catered huts up there, the number of hikers is fairly manageable and you can enjoy the unique tranquillity of unspoilt nature.
The trail leads mainly through the forest, which provides plenty of cool shade on hot sum-mer days. However, this means that the view is somewhat limited on the first half of the route. However, the upper section offers a wonderful view.
The diverse alpine flora of the Gsellwiesen will delight nature lovers in summer.
The ascent from Fischleintal to Innergsell is quite steep and arduous at first, but you can choose the length of the hike along the way as there are several options: The short detour to Außergsell is a little longer, but well worth it.
On the descent from Innergsell to Sexten, you cross a forest road after about half the dis-tance and follow it in the direction of Sexten/Moos.
The descent from Außergsell to Sexten is relatively steep again. You should take particular care here in wet weather.
Tip: Take hiking poles and a snack and drink with you.
