It is especially popular among hikers, climbers, mountaineers, bikers and families looking for an unforgettable active holiday in the Dolomites. The mountain scenery is breathtaking both from the valley and from the peaks.
The unique landscape of the Sexten Dolomites leaves a lasting impression and makes your stay at Ariane’s Guesthouse a truly unforgettable mountain experience.
Once you visit Sexten, you will always want to return.
The largest stone sundial in the world is an extraordinary natural phenomenon in the Sexten Dolomites, offering a landscape experience like nowhere else on earth. It is formed by the five striking peaks Neuner, Zehner (Sexten Rotwand), Elfer, Zwölfer and Einser, which shape the iconic mountain skyline around Sexten.
What makes it truly special is that the sundial of the Dolomites actually works. From the entrance of the Val Fiscalina (Fischleintal), you can observe the sun’s movement across the mountains. At the winter solstice, the sun stands exactly above Mount Zwölfer at 12:00 and above Mount Einser at 13:00.
Although the positions at 9:00 and 10:00 are not visible due to the ridge near Bad Moos, the natural time pattern of this unique Dolomite phenomenon remains consistent and fascinating.
The name Sexten is believed to originate from the Roman system of timekeeping. Romans counted hours from sunrise, and the sixth hour – the “sexta hora” – corresponded to midday. Historians suggest that Mount Zwölfer may have marked this “sixth hour,” giving the village its name.
Today, the Sexten Sundial in the 3 Zinnen Dolomites is one of the most fascinating natural attractions in South Tyrol, attracting visitors from all over the world.
Exploring on foot in the Sexten Dolomites means pure nature experience in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. Around the village of Sexten, you will find a variety of walking paths, hiking routes and alpine tours for all levels – from easy valley walks to challenging mountain hikes.
The region is world-famous for the iconic 3 Zinnen (Tre Cime di Lavaredo) and its unique, dramatic mountain landscape with breathtaking panoramic views. Every hike in the Dolomites offers new perspectives on this spectacular natural scenery.
The wider area is home to some of the most beautiful natural highlights in the Alps: the legendary Lake Braies (Pragser Wildsee), known from films featuring Terence Hill, the emerald-green Lago di Sorapis, and many other natural gems within the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Whether relaxed walks or alpine hiking adventures – the Sexten Dolomites offer the perfect route for every level and are considered one of the most beautiful hiking regions in South Tyrol.
The hike to the Gsellwiesen in Sexten is a true hidden gem for anyone seeking peace, nature and untouched landscapes in the heart of the 3 Zinnen Dolomites. Away from the popular routes, you will discover a quiet and authentic side of the Dolomites.
The trail mostly leads through shaded forest sections from the Fischleintal (Val Fiscalina) up towards Innergsell. Especially in summer, this route offers pleasant coolness and a relaxing atmosphere. While the views are limited in the lower section, the upper part rewards hikers with stunning panoramic views of the Sexten mountain landscape.
The Gsellwiesen are particularly special thanks to their rich alpine flora and very low number of visitors, as there are no mountain huts in this area. Nature lovers can enjoy pure silence and authentic slow hiking in the Dolomites.
Several route variations are possible: the ascent from Fischleintal is partly steep but can be adjusted in length. A detour to Außergsell extends the hike and offers additional viewpoints. The descent leads back towards Sexten or Moos – where caution is advised in wet conditions.
Tip: Bring hiking shoes, trekking poles, water and a small picnic to fully enjoy this peaceful nature experience in the Sexten Dolomites.
